On a summer day a few years ago, my daughter received a small fairy figurine as a gift and wanted the little lass to have her own place in the courtyard, which is where we grow a few finicky fruit trees, an aggressive grapevine, and some rosemary, mint, and other assorted herbs.
It seemed like a reasonable request, so we found an adorable little fairy house at the craft store and placed it and the fairy in a shady little nook.
Do you think that was the end of it? Oh, no.
It seems once you put a fairy in your garden, she’ll need fairy friends as well. Those friends will then need their own little fairy houses. You will probably need a little mushroom table and stools for them to have fairy tea parties. Perhaps a fairy swing and a fairy swimming pool for recreation. For the musically inclined fairies, a fairy guitar is also a must. Yes, all of these lovely fairy items have found their way to what is now our thriving fairy village, which I’m sure will continue to grow.
Do I have any regrets? Absolutely not. My daughter is older now and not quite as taken with her fairies as she used to be, but that’s all right. Every time I walk by Lake Fairest, I smile. That’s enough.
DO YOU HAVE A FAIRIES IN YOUR GARDEN? I’d love to see a picture if you’d like to share it. Send it to dd@ddcroix.com.
